Analgesia and sedation in intensive care unit.
نویسنده
چکیده
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES Many Intensive Care Unit (ICU) patients present pain. The administration of analgesics and sedatives is crucial for patient comfort and to reduce stress, as well as to prevent delay in recovery and ventilator weaning. The objective of the present study was to conduct a review on analgesia and sedation in the ICU. CONTENT The present study reviewed the causes of pain, the methods used to evaluate the intensity of pain and sedation and the conducts employed in pain treatment and sedation. Drug selection is important in order to prevent excessive sedation, by performing analgesia before the sedation. CONCLUSIONS The most commonly employed drugs are morphine, fentanyl, midazolam and propofol. Other medications are less frequently used.

متن کاملImportance of the use of protocols for the management of analgesia and sedation in pediatric intensive care unit.
Introduction: Analgesia and sedation are essential elements in patient care in the intensive care unit (ICU), in order to promote the control of pain, anxiety and agitation, prevent the loss of devices, accidental extubation, and improve the synchrony of the patient with mechanical ventilation. However, excess of these medications leads to rise in morbidity and mortality. The ideal management w...
متن کاملRemifentanil for analgesia-based sedation in the intensive care unit
Providing effective analgesia and adequate sedation is a generally accepted goal of intensive care medicine. Due to its rapid, organ independent and predictable metabolism the short acting opioid remifentanil might be particularly useful for analgesia-based sedation in the intensive care unit (ICU). This hypothesis was tested by two studies in this issue of Critical Care. The study by Breen et ...
متن کاملAnalgesia and sedation in the intensive care unit: an overview of the issues
Analgesic and sedative medications are widely used in intensive care units to achieve patient comfort and tolerance of the intensive care unit environment, and to eliminate pain, anxiety, delirium and other forms of distress. Surveys and prospective cohort studies have revealed wide variability in medication selection, monitoring using sedation scales, and implementation of structured treatment...

Introduction In critically ill patients discomfort can be alleviated with analgesia with or without the use of sedatives. However, continuous infusion of sedatives and analgesics is associated with prolonged mechanical ventilation [1]. On the other hand, inadequate sedation or analgesia results in unnecessary pain, sleep disturbance and delirium [2,3]. Therefore the ultimate challenge is to pro...
